Apparatus for the fluid treatment of textile material comprises a rotatable impellor having an asymmetrical peripheral surface constituted by crests and hollows defining channels extending parallel to the impellor axis to subject material in contact or near contact with the impellor to a fluid centrifugal force. The peripheral surface of the impeller is preferably of saw-toothed configuration with the tip of each tooth rounded. The impellor may be hollow and fluid is then fed to the interior of the impellor and leaves via perforations in the surface. The impellor may alternatively, comprise angularly-spaced curved blades mounted on radial spiders extending from a central shaft. The impellors are preferably employed in apparatus comprising a liquid trough 21, a plurality of the impellers 22 rotatably immersed in the liquid, and a plurality of guide rollers 24 arranged so that the material 27 follows a sinuous path through the apparatus. Rubber covered dance rollers 25 may be provided between adjacent guide rollers 24. Pipes 31 may be provided to inject steam or air into the space above the liquid level in the trough, a cover being provided over the top of the trough to prevent escape of steam or air. A mangle 26 is provided at the exit end of the trough to remove excess liquid from the material before it passes to further processing apparatus. The mangle 26 serves to draw the material through the apparatus, and in addition, the impellors and guide rollers may be positively driven or may be driven by material contact. Several such apparatus may be arranged in series with a conveyor belt, J-box or the like therebetween. Partitions 23 are preferably provided between adjacent impellors and are attached to the side walls of the trough at opposite ends, so that liquid fed concurrently or countercurrently with respect to the material follows a sinuous path. The base of the trough may comprise heat exchange panels to effect heating of the liquid. The level of liquid in the trough is controlled by means of an overflow 29.
