[Also in Division G3] The wall thickness of a metallic tube is measured by encircling the tube by a coil carrying current at medium frequency and measuring the current or the power absorbed by the coil. Alternatively the thickness may be determined indirectly by measuring the electrical resistance of a length of tube in a circuit between live feeder rollers, the length of tube forming one arm of a wheatstone bridge circuit. The arrangement is used in a programmed control system to develop a series of control signals representative of individual variations of wall thickness from the average of a batch which signals are fed sequentially into a store varying the stretch unparted in a multi-stand reduction mill to the individual tubes, fed in the same sequence so as to minimize variations within each batch.
