Abstract

1,158,260. Benzene; paraffinic hydrocarbons. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 28 Dec., 1966 [31 Dec., 1965], No. 58012/66. Heading C5E. Benzene is separated from a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons additionally containing paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons by introducing the mixture into a multi-stage extractor at an elevated temperature countercurrent to an organic solvent, drawing from the extractor an aromatic-rich liquid extract and a non-aromatic-rich liquid raffinate, cooling the extract to a temperature lower by at least 50‹ C. than the temperature in the extractor and separating it into a bottom phase and atop phase in a decanter, recycling the bottom phase (mainly solvent) to the extractor, azeotropically distilling the top phase (mainly benzene) with acetone, and recovering benzene from the distillation residue. Suitable solvents are diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, and sulpholane, and preferably contain 2-15% water as an anti-solvent. The top (benzene) phase from the decanter may be partially recycled to the extractor bottom. The acetone/paraffinic azeotrope may be water-washed to recover the acetone, which may be re-used. Benzene recovery from the azeotropic distillation residue is by rectification. In an example, nitration grade benzene is recovered from a hydrogenated reforming petrol cut, the paraffinic hydrocarbons also being recovered.
