Abstract

1,158,042. Knitting. M. NEBEL and E. NEBEL. 1 Sept., 1966 [8 Sept., 1965; 21 May, 1966], No. 39144/66. Headings D1C and D1K. In a method of incorporating loops held over one or more courses into a following course as tuck loops, loops, extending across at least two sinkers and formed on or behind the sinker hooks are directed into a slot, behind the hook and below the throat, where they remain, clear of the needle latches, until they are to be incorporated. The loops are directed into the slots by moving the sinkers into the needle circle to a greater extent than normal, so that the loops drop over the back of the hooks and into the opening of the slot; the sinkers are then withdrawn. Loops may be held on alternate needles in successive courses. The held loops may be incorporated in the next, or other following course, but the method is particularly applicable to knitting a turned welt by knitting a large number of courses before the held loops are incorporated. In knitting a turned welt yarn for the first course D 1 of the make-up courses D 1-3 Fig. 3, is taken by every second needle N 1 and layed behind needles N 2 . Yarn is taken by all the needles in course D 2 . In course D 3 loops M are formed in front of, on, or behind the sinker hooks, the yarn is laid behind needles N 2 to form float H, while loops M/F of the previous course are held. The connecting course D 4 comprises stitches M formed by needles N 1 , and the long loops F, later to be incorporated, formed on the extention P x of the sinker hook or on a raised loop sinking point (P z Fig. 2a not shown) behind the slot entrance. The sinkers are advanced further into the needle circle than usual by edge Ta of cam T 2 Fig. 10 and the needles lowered so that the loop F slips into the slot S behind and below the hook. The sinkers are then withdrawn slightly by edge Tb of cam T 4 to catch the loops. Welt courses D 5 are then knit over the loop sinking points Pd before loops F are incorporated. The held loops F may be incorporated as tuck loops in one of several ways. As shown in Fig. 7 the sinkers are advanced until the point Ps of the sinker is in front of the needle so that the held loop slips out of the slot. It is then raised by edge N x of the needle. Alternatively all needles (Fig. 8 not shown) or alternate needles N 2 Fig. 9 may be lowered below the slot S to draw loops of the last welt course D x through loops F when the needles are raised, loops of course D x pull loops F over the hooks. In a further method Fig. 23, held loops F are pulled away from the needles by withdrawing the sinkers so that the loops may be engaged by latches Z and withdrawn from the slot and lifted over the hooks when the sinkers are advanced and then withdrawn again. To assist in retaining the tuck loops F alternate sinkers (D 2 Fig. 28 not shown) are withdrawn while interveening ones (D 1 ) are moved to the cast off position. The sinkers are arranged to have butts spaced differently from their ends, for engagement with cams (T 2 , T 3 ).
