Abstract

1,158,020. Control systems for consumption apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 58662/67. Heading H2H. A system for supplying from an A.C. source a load having a positive temperature coefficient of resistance is so arranged that the current flow in the load at starting is reduced. A load 3 such as an incandescent lamp is supplied from an A.C. source 1, 2 by way of a pair of reverse parallel connected thyristors 6, 11, the control signals for which are derived from a circuit comprising capacitors 7, 10 and resistors 8, 9, the resistor 8 having a negative temperature coefficient of resistance. When switching on the resistor 8 is cold and has a high resistance. The capacitors 7, 10 will-in consequencetake a relatively long time to charge to a value sufficient to break down the DIACS 14, 17 and supply the thyristors 6, 11 with trigger signals. The current flow in the lamp 3 will therefore be small. As the resistor 8 warms up and its resistance falls, the capacitors 7, 10 will charge more quickly. Thus the thyristors 6, 11 will fire earlier in the respective half cycles of the A.C. supply and the current flow in the lamp 3 will increase until the normal current flow is reached. If desired the resistor 9 may be a variable resistor by means of which the current flow through the lamp 3-and hence its brilliancy-may be controlled. In another embodiment the thyristors 6, 11 may be replaced by a TRIAC in which case the control circuit will comprise only one of the capacitors 7, 10.
