Abstract

1,157,979. Fuel elements. COMBUSTION ENG. Inc. 13 Oct., 1966 [2 Dec., 1965], No. 45881/66. Heading G6C. In a nuclear fuel element assembly comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending fuel elements, the fuel elements are secured to a support plate at one end of the assembly by means of spring pins which extend partially into holes in the ends of the fuel elements and partially into holes in the support plate, which latter holes are in alignment with those in the assembled fuel elements. The spring pins may be slotted, tubular pins of C-shaped cross-section, or be spirally shaped. A second support plate is secured to the other end of the fuel elements, extensions on these ends protruding into holes in the support plate which are larger in diameter than the extensions and these are thus free to move upon thermal expansion of the fuel elements. Rods extend between and are bolted to the support plates to hold them in position with respect to each other.
