Hair-curling apparatus comprises a rotatable post about which a hair tuft is loosely wound and gripped by a clasp pivoted to the post, and a clamp for gripping hair strands between the scalp and the post, so that the tuft can be tightly wound against the resistance of the clamp, means being provided for locking the post and clasp in a wound position. In Fig. 1, a tuft 10 is loosely wound about post 11 and loosely gripped by clasp 12 A tuft enclosure 22 comprises a pair of separable sections 23, 24 closable about post 11, clasp 12 and the tuft by pivoting about hinge pin 31, the hair strands 21 leading towards the tuft 10 being firmly clamped between sawtooth edges 27, 28 carried on the sections 23, 24. The end 34 of post 11 is received in aperture 33 of enclosure 22, and the tuft is then tightly wound against the resistance of the clamp by rotation of cap 18 carried on the other end 19 of post 11. The wound position is maintained by interlocking detents 43, 43a carried on cap 18 and enclosure 22. Fig. 1 illustrates the curler with the post and clasp axially separated from the enclosure prior to clamping. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), the post (65) and clasp (66) are rotatably mounted between two annular members (61), (62), connected by an arcuate portion (63). The portion (63) supports one section (76) of the clamp to which the second section (77) is pivoted, the sawtooth elements (78) being provided on the two clamp sections. A rotatable cap (86) fixed to post (65) carries an inwardly extending skirt encircling member (62), both the skirt and the member (62) having detents formed in their peripheries. The jaws of the clamp can be lined with resilient material, and can be latched together by means of parts (83), (85).
