Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A conveyer system including at least one station wherein, article carriers 5 driven by engagement with an endless drive chain 3 (first drive means) are disengaged therefrom by a cam rail 26 and driven intermittently at a reduced speed by a reciprocating conveyer (second drive means) driven from said first drive means. The drive chain 3 rotates a gearwheel 9 having a first connecting rod 14 eccentrically mounted thereon and imparting a reciprocating motion to a plate 15 rotatable about a shaft. The plate 15 mounts a spring 18 biased pawl 17 for engagement with a ratchetwheel 19 to produce a step-wise rotation thereof. The ratchet-wheel 19 is fixed to the shaft which thus imparts the step-wise rotation to a further plate (15a) (Fig. 2, not shown) eccentrically fixed thereto and driving a second connecting rod 20 in step-wise reciprocating motion. The connecting rod 20 is connected to a feed bar 21, in turn connected to a feed rail 22 with pawls 23 biased by springs 24 for engagement with catches 28 affixed to the carriers 5 to drive the same intermittently at a reduced speed. The first and second connecting rods 14, 20 are attached in slots to the gear-wheel 9 and the further plate 15a respectively, whereby the amount of eccentricity and thus the advancing speed can be varied. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4-6, not shown), the ratchet-wheel 19 is replaced by a roller coupling (31) and a locking arrangement (34) to eliminate backward movement of the coupling. A friction coupling (33) is interposed between the roller coupling (31) and the further plate to disengage the second drive means should the advancing force exceed a predetermined amount, e.g. due to blockages or in the stacking of the carriers.
