Abstract

[Also in Division H4] A waveguide component comprises a rigid, low-loss, foam dielectric material having a dielectric constant approximately equal to that of air and having the internal shape of the component, selected areas of its surface being covered with a thin metallic coating sufficient to support r.f. currents. The material may comprise an organic foam, e.g. foamed polystyrene or polyurethane, or an inorganic foam e.g. borosilicate cellular glass or a material consisting of silica glass in the form of tiny spheres pressed together. After shaping, the dielectric material is de-glazed by abrasion (scrubbing with pumice and water may be necessary in some cases) and then cleaned by an appropriate alkaline or acid cleaner. A solution of stannous chloride is used to develop a film of tin on the surface which is then treated with an activator solution e.g. palladium chloride. The material is then immersed in an electroless copper bath containing Fehling-formaldehyde solution where chemical reduction takes place. Apertures in the coated surface may be produced by milling or by masking appropriate areas before the plating process. The antenna shown comprises slots 13 in a metallic coating 11 upon the surface of a foam dielectric body 12. Waveguide channel 14 are defined by internally plated holes 15 which behave as metal posts. Conventional waveguides and waveguide flanges may be made using the method of the invention (Fig. 4, not shown). Fig. 3 shows in a self-explanatory manner the way in which the invention is applied to the manufacture of a directional coupler.
