Abstract

1,156,588. Fire-resistant regenerated cellulose fibres. KOKOKU RAYON & PULP CO. Ltd. 24 Oct., 1967, No. 48168/67. Heading B5B. Fire-resistant regenerated cellulose fibres obtained by spinning viscose contain dispersed in them a water-insoluble triaryl phosphate having the general formula (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP>, which may be the same or different, are each a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group). The fibres may be produced by dispersing the phosphate in viscose and then spinning the viscose. The substituents in the aryl groups may be the hydroxy groups, halogen atoms, alkyl groups and/or other aryl groups. The preferred halogen substituent is chlorine, preferably in the ortho position. The preferred alkyl groups are methyl and t-butyl groups, the latter being preferably in the para position. The preferred aryl group is the phenyl group. The phosphate may be dispersed in the viscose in the form of an emulsion in water or in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of an emulsifier. The phosphates used in the examples are tricresyl phosphate, trixylenyl phosphate, cresyl diphenyl phosphate, diphenyl-o-xylenyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, tris(p-tert-butylphenyl)phosphate, 2-biphenylyl diphenyl phosphate, p-tert-butylphenyl diphenyl phosphate, bis(p-tert-butylphenyl) phenyl phosphate, o-chlorophenyl diphenyl phosphate, bis(o-chlorophenyl) phenyl phosphate, and tris (2- biphenylyl) phosphate. The phosphate may be dispersed in the viscose either in its undiluted form or as a solution in an organic solvent such as carbon disulphide.
