Abstract

1,156,550. Thermal insulation; pipe insulation. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 9 Dec., 1966 [13 Dec., 1965], No. 55129/66. Headings F2P and F2X. Insulation system particularly for pipes and tanks, comprising a thermal insulation layer disposed around the surface to be insulated and covered with a layer of fibrous material coated with a layer of mastic material non-porous to water, the layer of fibrous material being a woven or non-woven fabric more than 50% by weight of the fibres of which are made from a polymer of vinyl chloride, and the layer of mastic material having a degree of extensibility at least equal to that of the fabric. The polymers include polyvinylchloride, and co-polymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, vinylacetate or acrylonitrile. As mastic there may be used polyvinylacetate as the resin base, rubber films, asphalt, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, sulphonated butadiene, or acrylic rubber. The fabric may be knitted, or non- woven fabric such as lenoweave, warp knit, circular knit, or resin-bonded non-woven scrims or mats. The thermal insulation layer may be calcium silicate, expanded silica, cellular glass, fibre glass blocks, segments or blankets, rigid polyurethane foam or asbestos mats and blocks. The blocks can be held in place by wires or steel bands.
