Abstract

1332554 Pile fabric; non-woven fabric R P CROWLEY 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 26048/71 Headings DIK and D1R A pile fabric is prepared by forming an expandable polymeric material containing a thermally activatable blowing agent into thermally exuandable fibres, securing the expandable fibres to a backing sheet to form a surface covering wherein the fibres penetrate at least in part the backing sheet, and heating to activate the blowing agent whereby expansion of the expandable fibres locks them securely to the backing sheet. The fibres may be extruded from polymers of vinyl chloride (polymerised alone or with vinylidine chloride or vinyl acetate), C 2 -C 4 olefins, copolymars of ethylene, propylene and butylene or elastomeric polymers such as butyl rubber, neoprene, polybutadiene or styrene-acrylonitrile-butadiene, and may have eliptical or ribbon-like cross section 0.1 to 25 parts blowing agent per 100 parts resin is included, e.g. azodicarbonamide, oxybisbenzesulphonylhydrazide or dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine. Non expandable fibres may be mixed in, or combined with the expandable fibres in multiple strands. Alternatively the expandable material may be cast as a 2 to 100ml thick sheath over single or multiple strands of cotton, wool, rayon, jute, nylon, polyester, aorylic, vinyl, olefin, or continuous filaments of olefin polyester, nylon, acrylic, glass or steel. The fibres may be tufted, needle punched or woven into the backing. The backing sheet may comprise gas-expandable fibres, a solid flexible gas expandable polyvinyl chloride sheet, paper, resin reinforced paper, a woven fabric of jute or sisal yarns optionally with gas expandable fibres woven in, a sheet of asbestos or fibre glass, knitted, braided or stretched fabrics. The fabric is then heated to expand the fibres and optionally to soften the resin of the fibres and/or the backing sheet to produce bonding. In an example 100 parts polyvinyl chloride, 10 to 50 parts dioctylphthalate plasticiser, 5 parts titanium dioxide pigment, 4 parts zinccadmium soap stabiliser and 2 parts azodicarbonamide blowing agent is extruded as continuous filaments, optionally over a nylon core. The filaments are tufted onto a closely woven fabric, to which may be laminated a gas-expandable polyvinyl chloride sheet. The fabric is heated at 175-200‹C in a hot air oven or under infrared heaters to decompose the blowing agent and fuse the polyvinyl chloride resin.
