Abstract

1302467 Moulded cane-reinforced bodies D LINI and R RAMASCHI 28 May 1971 [30 May 1970] 18019/71 Heading B5A A shaped body is made from at least one layer of natural canes arranged parallel and held in place by expanded synthetic resin. The canes are stripped of leaves, preferably treated with non - inflammable and water - repellant material laid up in a shaping device preferably with each layer 1a, 1b, 1c, &c. arranged at right angles to the previous layer, and expansible synthetic resin is fed in under pressure to foam and produce a body of expanded resin in which the canes are embedded. Further canes may be placed at right angles to the layers to form a three-dimensional reinforcing structure. The resin may form a wall-like outer coating and an additional laminated layer 3 may be applied to the top of the body, e.g. a block, whilst the lower layer In may be laid on a bed 4 of inert material, e.g. gravel, glass fibre or asbestos. The expandable resin may be, e.g. polyurethane or an epoxy, urea phenolic, polystyrene, silicone, polyvinyl or acrylonitrile. The non-inflammable and water repellent material may be a chloroprene, urea formaldehyde or other aminoplast resin. The shaped bodies may be formed in a mould or a continuous process may be used by feeding the materials into one end of a rectangular section shaping device formed by upper and lower horizontal conveyer belts with vertical side walls. The canes may be cut to length before feeding or the shaped body may be cut into lengths. The method can be used to mould boats, furniture or tanks for domestic or industrial use.
