Abstract

1,156,440. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 14 June, 1968 [5 July, 1967], No. 28472/68. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel assembly comprises a plurality of canned fuel pencils maintained in parallel relation along the nodes of a lattice by means of a support grid to which one end of each fuel pencil is attached and by means of one or more braces which maintain the spacing of the fuel pencils along the assembly. The support grid comprises an annular member 24 and a series of rectilineal and parallel supporting beams 22 secured to the annular member and having an elongated transverse cross-section in the direction of coolant flow, each beam being made up of two strip components joined by means of spot welds 38. The strip components are so shaped as to form, when juxtaposed, collars for accommodating necked portions of the upper end-caps 18 of the fuel pencils. The fuel canning is stainless steel, a zirconium-base alloy or berryllium and the end-caps have a substantial vertical development. There is formed in a locking endring attached to the annular member 24 an annular recess which is intended to receive the jaws of a fuel-handling grab. Parallel slots in the form of castellated notches are formed in the walls of the annular member 24 and are equal in depth to the height of the beams 22. In the embodiment shown, the strip components are asymmetric. Thus the collars are not located at the nodes of a constant-mesh lattice but at the nodes of a pseudo-circular lattice. The fuel assembly may be located in a tubular sleeve of moderator material so as to constitute a cartridge which can be handled as a single unit.
