Abstract
1,156,215. Making bearings; welding by pressure. FAFNIR BEARING CO. 4 April, 1967, No. 15293/67. Headings B3A and B3R. An anti-friction bearing annular retainer for rolling elements comprises two steel retainer rings joined together by spot welds at abutting surfaces of the rings, the carbon content of the steel at the spot welds not exceeding 0À06% by weight. To obtain this carbon content the surface of the steel may be decarburized during annealing or steel made by the rimming process may be used. A pair of rings 10, 11, Fig. 1, having spaced ball receiving pockets 12, 13 and flat portions 14 are spot welded at 15 to hold ball bearings 16. The retainer ring with its complement of balls is assembled with an inner annular raceway and an outer annular raceway to form an anti-friction bearing. Small embossed dimples are provided on each flat portion and current and pressure are applied simultaneously to each flat portion to projection spot weld the rings together. The electrodes employed may be cylindrical with a number of projecting points 43a, Fig. 5, hydraulic rams 41, 42 bringing the points together on to a retainer ring assembly with the balls already located in position. The retainer ring assembly and balls may be arranged within the inner and outer raceways prior to welding. The carbon content may be as low as 0À04% and the parts may be submerged in oil during welding.
