A contact screen for use in the production of continuous tone originals, comprising two series of dots of different areas spaced so that the elements of the two series alternate with each other in a one and one sequence in two mutually transverse directions. The dots may be square, circular, elliptical or rhomboidal. The contact screen may be made by exposing a transparent film K with a low-contrast light-sensitive layer X, through a cross-line screen R and a diaphragm H with two openings H 1 and H 2 which are of different size or translucency or colour (if the film is differently sensitive to two colours) by light source L. Alternatively a diaphragm with one aperture may be used and the cross-line screen may have two sets of openings of different size, translucency or colour. A further possibility is to use two exposures and adjust the position of the diaphragm, cross-line screen or film so that the second series are produced in the desired positions.
