Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and E1] In a sheet or tile casting process the resin, e.g. a polyester, polyurethane or an epoxy, contains particles having a density lower than that of the resin matrix so that they move to the surface during setting. The movement of the particles can be assisted by externally applied force, e.g. a magnetic or electrostatic force. The particles may be selected to impart a decorative effect to the surface or to impart a particular property, e.g. slip resistance. The particles may be composite, e.g. by being produced by mixing hollow spheres of phenolic resin and silicon carbide, silica or aluminium oxide or by being embedded in a foam. The particles may be of a polyester or epoxy resin. When used as flooring the glass may be removed by scrubbing or grinding.
