Abstract
1,155,737. Forming fibrous wads. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. 7 Nov., 1966 ]15 Nov., 1965], No. 49720/66. Headings D1N and D1R. A wad of fibres e.g. of wool for use in a subsequent felting process is formed by feeding a carded web 24 and laying it, under pressure, back and forth across the mouth of a conduit 1 through which the layered web is forced as the operation proceeds. As shown web 24 passes through a slot in a plate 14 reciprocated across the top of cylindrical conduit 1 which has upstanding pins or combs 8 to hold the folds of web. As the process proceeds the layers are forced down the conduit to be expelled at its lower end as a cylindrical wad. The web overhanging the mouth of the conduit, being cut away by blades 9 which are driven by a motor 13 about the conduit. The conduit is rotatably supported and is driven by a motor 7 so that successive layers of web are laid at an angle to each other. In a further form the guide plate 14 is stationary and conduit 1 is reciprocated. In Fig. 8 (not shown) guide plate 14 is replaced by a series of rollers (36) mounted in a frame (39) which can be reciprocated, the rollers having associated pinions engaging stationary racks to be rotated. The web passes between guide plates between the centre pair of rollers and is laid at the mouth of a rectangular conduit inclined at a shallow angle to the plane of the roller frame, the bottom wall of the conduit being formed by a conveyer belt. Thus a rectangular wad with layers lying at a shallow angle to its upper and lower surfaces is formed. The web fed to the rectangular conduit may be a composite web. The rollers (36) may be in two groups each surrounded by an endless belt with the web being fed between them. A pair of members may be provided adjacent the central roller pair which members are alternately brought into contact with the web at successive reversal points to ensure a clean fold. Steam, detergent or other felting fluid may be fed to web as it enters the conduit to provide a degree of pre-felting.
