Sequential numbers are printed on a succession of documents and a permanent record of check digits for the sequence of numbers is used to control printing means to print on each document the check digit corresponding to the sequential number thereof. In one embodiment, two or more numbering boxes are mounted on a rotatable carriage and arranged to travel successively through a number changing station, an inking station and a printing station there being associated with each box a check digit printing wheel which is set under the control of the record to the correct check digit for the number to be printed. In another embodiment a rotary printing machine is provided with a line printer comprising separately driven rotatable printing discs which printer is controlled by a punched tape record to print sequential numbers and their corresponding check digits on continuous web stationery being printed by the rotary press. In an alternative arrangement, the numbers are printed by a conventional numbering box (or several boxes in cyclic succession) controlled by the printing machine and the check digits are printed by a separately driven disc under the control of the record. In one further embodiment, the numbers and their check digits are printed one figure at a time by a tape-controlled typewriter.
