Abstract

1,155,630. Programmed control of machines. BELOIT CORP. Nov.2, 1966 [Jan. 5, 1966], No.49094/66. Heading G3N. A system for controlling a plurality of slitter units for dividing a supply roll of web material into smaller rolls comprises a computer, responsive to a plurality of inputs corresponding to demanded sizes, which selects a group of inputs providing a minimum of waste when the roll is divided and a plurality of positioning motors for the slitting units responsive to the selected inputs. As shown, a digital computer 11 is supplied with information on punched cards 12 derived from order data sheets 13. The computer reads and sorts the information on the cards and delivers output signals to a display unit and control console 14. The mode of display is determined by selector switches 14a, 14b and switches 14c set information relating to the operating state of the system into the computer for integration with the information from the punched tapes. The computer issues command signals to a slitter control 22, through a line 23, which controls the operation of slitter motors 24. Feedback signals, indicative of slitter position is applied to the slitter control through a line 27. A manual entry control 29 may be used to over-ride any of the command signals from the computer 11 and the distance between a slitter band and the corresponding slitter blade is adjustable in small increments by a manual entry control 31 delivering signals to the slitter control 22. A unit 20 prints a label, or prints directly on the paper, warehouse storage data. In an alternative arrangement, a digital to analogue converter is used to enable a summing circuit to be used for manual or automatic control of the positioning motors. In other arrangements the slitters are positioned by stepping motors or clutches responsive to digital signals.
