Abstract

1,155,603. Automatic phase control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 4 Nov., 1966 [10 Nov., 1965], No. 47661/65. Heading H3A. A radio transmitter wherein signals, e.g. from a master oscillator, are fed via two channels to a combining circuit 8 and a load, e.g. an aerial, is characterized in that one of the channels includes a phase modulator 4, and an output of the combining circuit feeds an amplitude detector 6 the output of which is compared with the phase modulation source 9 to control a phase shift circuit 5 disposed in one of the channels. In the system shown the motor 10 driving the phase shift circuit 5 is of the two phase type which rotates only when its two inputs are out of phase. The channels include amplifiers 2a and 2b the outputs of which are equalized by an amplitude control unit 7. The combining circuit 8 may comprise a hybrid ring circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), and when the channels each include a travelling wave amplifier, Fig. 4 (not shown), the phase modulation and the phase shift may be applied by supplying appropriate voltages to the helix of the travelling wave tube.
