In a surveillance system for centrally monitoring one or more physical variables, at a plurality of remote locations, e.g. sound, a background signal, generated at each remote location, e.g. either a continuous low frequency hum or a series of bleeps, is superimposed upon each transmission line and reproduced, either audibly or visually on a meter, at the central station whereby the correct functioning of the equipment can be checked continuously. A conventional thermionic amplifier suitable for use at both a remote location and at the central station is described (Fig. 2, not shown).
