Heading C1A In a process for perparing sodium or potassium borohydride by reaction of (a) sodium or potassium hydride with (b) sodium or potassium fluoroborate or trimethyl borate, a homogenized oil suspension of the finely divided reactants is formed into a flowable layer 0À1-40 mm. thick which is then heated to 250-350‹ C. preferably in a hydrogen or inert atmosphere the pressure of which is 1-10 atm. The solids concentration in the oil suspension is preferably 5-30 wt. per cent and the sodium or potassium hydride is preferably used in excess (e.g. 10 mol. per cent) of the stoichiometric amount. In one embodiment of the invention, the homogenized oil suspension is allowed to run as a film down the inner surface of a heated cylindrical reactor, the thickness of the film being controlled by axially mounted rotating blades. In another embodiment, the suspension is passed between two heated plates spaced at 0À5-40mm. The borohydride formed may be extracted from the resulting suspension or from the residue after separation of the oil therefrom, by means of an amine or liquid ammonia, the borohydride being recovered from the extract by spray drying. The process of the invention is applicable to the reaction of the hydride of one metal with the fluoroborate of the same or other metal, the latter case being illustrated by the reaction KBF 4 + 4NaH-#KBH 4 + 4NaF. Sodium fluoroborate. used in the above process may be purified before use by adjusting the pH of an aqueous solution thereof to less than 2.4 with hydrofluoric acid and then spray drying.
