[Also in Division H5] A refractory vessel for melting metal or maintaining metal molten comprising an outer metal sheath 6 and a refractory lining 4 adapted to tilt about shafts 12 for pouring has a U - shaped duct 14 extending from the bottom thereof formed by three separate parts 16, 18 and 20 each of which comprises an outer non- magnetic metal tube 22, an inner refractory tube 26, and a layer of fluidic refractory rammed or cast therebetween, the parts being releasably connected together and the whole being releasably attached to the metal casing 6 by means of flanges 23 or by spigot joints. Induction heating means for the metal in the duct comprising windings 32 on an annular metal core 30 is supported on a framework to allow the parts of the duct to be replaced without disturbing the heating assembly. A water cooled metal tube may be welded to the outer surface of the tube 22. A micamite gasket coated with refractory cement is inserted in the joint between the crucible and the duct to provide a metal tight joint and electrical insulation. The inner layer of refractory may be formed by ramming or casting around a fuzible or withdrawable former.
