Abstract

1,154,701. Spot-type disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 15 June. 1966 [24 June, 1965; 7 Sept., 1965], Nos. 26781/65 and 38089/65. Heading F2E. In a spot-type disc brake of the kind wherein one friction pad assembly 36, 38 is directly applied to one side of a brake disc 16 by an actuator 28 which reactively moves a floating U-shaped caliper, having limbs 34, 44 joined by a bridge portion 50, to indirectly apply the other friction pad assembly 40, 42 carried by limb 44 of the caliper to the other side of the brake disc, a torque plate 10 is fixedly mounted adjacent said one disc side and is provided with integral circumferentially-spaced flange portions extending axially across the disc periphery and defining inwardly-facing guide edges 26 which co-operate with outwardly facing surfaces on the caliper bridge portion, the drag force on the indirectly applied pad assembly 40, 42 being transmitted to one or other of said edges, dependent on direction of drum rotation, through the caliper bridge portion. As shown, the torque plate is of pressed steel plate and of circular shape so that it serves as a brake disc dust shield although, as indicated by the chain-lines, it could be otherwise shaped. The plate is provided with a radial opening 18 in its radial outer edge, the sides of which constitute torque taking and guide surfaces 20 for the directly-applied friction pad assembly 36, 38. A circumferential rib 22 is provided to strengthen the sides of said opening. A further opening 24 defines the circumferentially-spaced flanged portions defining edges 26. The caliper, which is also a metal pressing, is slidably located at its leading end, Fig. 2 (not shown), on a pin 30, the caliper being provided with pin-engageable holes 32 at either end so that either end may constitute the leading end depending whether the brake is fitted to the left-hand or right-hand side of a vehicle. In another embodiment, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), of Provisional Specification Cognate, the torque plate is formed from two spot-welded dished pressings 46, 48 and the caliper is universally pivoted by a spherical headed spindle 40 journalled in the torque plate. In a modification of the latter embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the caliper is pivoted to the torque plate by a transverse pin 62 passing through lugs on the caliper and upstanding flanges on the plate.
