Abstract

1,154,560. Suspended ceilings. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. 12 Sept., 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 40694/66. Heading E1W. The cross beam 5 of a suspended ceiling grid has an end extension 10 which engages an aperture 17 in the web of the main beam 15 in which it is positioned by a notch 11, the extension having a portion 12 sloping from said notch and serving to cam the end of the beam 5 upwardly by thrusting against the bottom of the aperture 17 as the beam 5 expands, thereby lifting the end of the beam 5 clear of the flange 18 of the main beam so that unrestricted continued expansion of the cross beam may take place. The cross beam also comprises a stop 13 which co-operates with the web 16 of the main beam and which is deformed as the cross beam expands. The main beam incorporates an expansion joint between main and adjacent main beam sections 15, 15' in which a splicing plate fixed to the section 15' and slidable along the section 15 carries a tab 24 which upon expansion acts upon a cam structure 27 formed at the end of the section 15 and deflects the flange 18 downwardly about a notch 26 to open up the joint J so that expansion of the main beam can be absorbed. In a further embodiment a further notch, Fig. 6, (not shown) in the connector portion 10 of the cross beam 5 is provided to prevent accidental dislodgment during installation. In another modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) the stop 13 is offset at an angle.
