Abstract

1,153,757. Refractory material. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE DE COMBUSTIBLE NUCLEAIRE. 8 July, 1966 [9 July, 1965], No. 30779/66. Headings C1A and CIJ. A refractory material, for use as lining for a crucible, mould or stopper in contact with a liquid reactive metal, consists of a fuzed mass of a rare earth oxide, a binary mixture of two rare earth oxides or a rare earth oxide and such an amount of ZrO 2 as can be chemically combined with the rare earth oxide, or a two-component mixed oxide of definite composition in which one component is a rare earth oxide and the other either a rare earth oxide or ZrO 2 . The rare earth oxide may be ClO 2 , La 2 O 3 , Nd 2 O 3 or Y 2 O 3 . Examples of mixed oxides are La 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 , Y 2 O 3 - ZrO 2 and La 2 O 3 -Y 2 O 3 , and an example of a definite compound is 2ZrO 2 .La 2 O 3 . The refractory materials of the invention may be sprayed on to a matrix with a gas or plasma torch in the form of a powder of mean diameter 10-100 Á.
