[Also in Division C2] Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for oral or intravenous administration in the treatment of Cardiac insufficiency comprise a compound of formula (wherein R 1 is hydrogen or hydroxyl, R 2 is methyl, formyl or hydroxymethyl, and R 3 is hydrogen or hydroxyl) or a 3-glycoside thereof, dissolved in water or a water-miscible solvent. Exemplified compounds of the above formula are 16-epi-gitoxin, 16-epi-diginatin, desacetyl- 16-epi-oleandrin and 16-eipi-gitoxigenin.
