Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A protected metal article comprises a metal substrate and an exterior coating comprising a film of a fused composition comprising polyvinyl fluoride, pigments including titanium dioxide, carrier, and 2 to 12% by wt. of the polyvinyl fluoride of a stabilizer which in preference to titanium dioxide will react with hydrogen fluoride without discolouration and is selected from (a) oxides of alkaline earth metals or lead; (b) salts of alkaline earth metals or lead; (c) mixtures of (a) and (b); and (d) organic compounds containing unreacted groups and having an epoxy equivalent from 100 to 4000. The metal substrate may be aluminium, which may have received a chromatizing or phosphatizing pretreatment, and the stabilizer is a mixture of calcium carbonate and calcium stearate; galvanized steel, which may have been phosphatized, coated with a primer coating and the stabilizer is lead carbonate. The protected article may be made by applying e.g. by spraying, to the metal substrate a wet coating from 2 to 10 mils thick of the composition containing powdered polyvinyl fluoride, heating the coated substrate to between 475 and 525‹F for 5 to 15 minutes to achieve an essentially non-discolouring heat fusion of the composition to a uniform thickness coating, and cooling the coated substrate. Examples of preferred stabilizers are given.
