Abstract

1,153,306. Perfluoro-olefin epoxides and fluorine containing polymers. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 31 Aug., 1966 [6 Sept., 1965], No. 38908/66. Addition to 1,104,482. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Epoxides of perfluoro-olefins and polymers containing -C 3 F 6 O- and -C 3 F 6 O-O- units alone or with -C 2 F 4 O- and -C 2 F 4 O-O- units are obtained by reacting C 3 F 6 optionally mixed with C 2 F 4 with oxygen in the liquid phase at - 100‹ to + 25‹ C. under the action of the high-energy ionizing radiation of γ-rays or neutron rays. Sources of radiation specified are natural radioactive substances, radioactive byproducts of nuclear fission, and materials made radioactive by exposure to neutron radiation, many radio-isotopes being specified, e.g. cobalt- 60. The carboxylic end groups of the polymeric products may be removed, e.g. by decarboxylation with alkali at 150-350‹ C., to give modified products useful as lubricants (see Division C5).
