Abstract
1,187,368. Radio-active sources. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. 24 July, 1969 [2 Aug., 1968], No. 12786/69. Heading G6R. A radio-active point source comprises radioactive iodine absorbed on a particle or particles of activated charcoal. The particle may be a granule of charcoal or may be a pellet formed from charcoal powder after absorption of the iodine. The particle or pellet may be enclosed in a capsule. The source is formed by agitating the charcoal particle or particles with an organic solution of radio-active iodine, which may be prepared by oxidizing radio-active NaI in acidic aqueous solution with ferric ammonium sulphate and extracting the iodine formed with carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chloroform, or ether. I 125 provides a low energy gamma source useful in back scattering procedures and in bone scanning. Alternatively, I 131 may be absorbed, providing a high energy gamma-ray source.
