Abstract

1,153,177. Pipe couplings; hydraulic brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 12 Aug., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 37869/65. Headings F and G. In a permanently coupled spigot and socket assembly, e.g. coupling together a reservoir tank 1 and the cylinder body of a master cylinder for an automobile hydraulic system, a resilient split ring 7 engaged in confronting grooves 8, 9 in the spigot and socket respectively holds in compression, by the action thereof, a resiliently, deformable sealing ring 11. The groove 9 may be coned, and relative rotation between the spigot and socket prevented by a projection on the socket engaging in a slot or groove in the spigot. In modifications, (a) the sealing ring is positioned between the end of the spigot and the base of the socket, (b) the inner end of the spigot is conical in form to deform a sealing ring of initially square cross-section therebetween and the bottom of the socket, and (c) the spigot is formed on the cylinder body and the socket on the tank.
