Abstract
1,153,163. Pantographs, electrically heated cutting wires. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 25 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 18853/66. Heading B5A. A device for cutting plastics material to a shape similar to an article or plan comprises a pantograph, with a cutting head carrying on ohmically heated wire with means to maintain tension despite expansion of the wire. The cutting wire 29 is mounted between arms 13, 27 pivoted at 25 and biased apart at the wire by a spring connected across their other ends. The apparatus is pivoted about a vertical rod 199 and the plan or object to be copied is traced by scriber 207. The point 25 may alternatively rest on a ball ended leg running or a table coated with P.T.F.E. to reduce friction. Alternatively the wire mounting may be fixed and the plastics material mounted on a movable carriage so that sections may be cut from the material. The apparatus may be used to cut sections of foamed plastics material using a contour map, from which both a 3-dimensional model, and a mould (from which further models can be produced by a lost-wax process) may be formed.
