Abstract

1,153,001. Colour images; colour screens. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 14, 1966 [July 16, 1965], No. 26439/66. Headings G2C and G2H. [Also in Division H1] Multi-colour images are prepared by imagewise exposing a supported transparent thermoplastic layer through a filter composed of red, blue, green and optionally black areas to break up the image into small areas of primary coloured light which form a charge pattern on the surface of the layer, and heat-softening the layer to form a deformation image composed of ridges and valleys. In the particular embodiments described, the charge image is formed by either (a) exposing a thermoplastic layer (4) (e.g. of polystyrene) containing a photo-ionizable substance (e.g. iodoform) Fig. 1 (not shown); (b) uniformly electrostatically positively charging a thermoplastic layer (13) containing a photo-conductor, exposing, and uniformly electrostatically negatively charging the layer to give a photographically positive image, Fig. 2 (not shown); or (c) uniformly electrostatically charging a thermoplastic layer which is adjacent a photo-conductive layer, and exposing Fig. 6 (not shown). The multicolour image may be broken up into small primary coloured areas by a transparent colour screen composed of small areas of red, green, blue and black Figs. 1-6 (not shown), or by placing Fig. 7 a lenticular screen 36 adjacent the thermoplastic layer 39, and projecting an image through a filter 30 having red, green and blue areas 31 to 33, on to the lenticular screen 36, to expose the underlying thermoplastic layer. The coloured images produced may be viewed using a Schlieren system in conjunction with the colour filter system used to prepare the image. In process (b) above, the charging and exposure may be controlled so that the grooves formed on heat development extend completely through the thermoplastic layer (23, Fig. 3, not shown), and, if the thermoplastic layer is partially opaque, the resulting image may be viewed directly. The colour screens used may be prepared by either (a) dusting a tacky glass plate with a mixture of 13-25Á particles of starch or resin dyed red, blue and green Fig. 4 (not shown), and filling the interstices with graphite or carbon black; (b) laminating sequentially red, green and blue sheets having a thickness of 13-100Á either using a black adhesive or separating each set of sheets with a black sheet Fig. 5 (not shown), and slicing perpendicular to the laminations; or (c) laminating together with black adhesive a series of screens produced as in (b) and then slicing perpendicular to the laminations to give a screen wherein each element is a square or rectangle.
