Abstract

1,152,734. Making composite tubes. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 5 Sept., 1966 [17 Sept., 1965], No. 39656/66. Heading B3A. [Also in Divisions F2 and H1] A composite tubular structure comprising two coaxial cylindrical cases 2, 6 of heat resistant metal or alloy which are electrically and thermally insulated from each other by an intermediate layer 7 of a powdered material, such as a heat-resistant oxide, is made by mounting the two cases one in the other with an air gap therebetween, introducing the oxide material into the gap and co-forging the composite structure at such a high temperature that upon cooling and for all subsequent use the outer case remains under elastic tension. The interposition of the powdered material may be effected by using partially or wholly pre-sintered rings of the material which are broken up to give a powder during shrinkage. Alternatively the powder may be longitudinally compressed between the two cases by annular pistons, either when hot or cold. A further alternative is to cover the inner ease with the material by its projection using a plasma blowpipe or schoop gun and thereafter grinding to size. The coforging operation may be magneto-forging or isostatic pressing or rolling, carried out on a reducing machine. Different elongations of the inner and outer cases may be avoided by suitable mounting. A series of these structures may be stacked to form part of a thermionic converter, Fig. 2 (not shown).
