Abstract

115,266. Croft, F. L. May 2, 1917. Submarine vessels.-A detachable buoyant escape chamber for submarines and other vessels comprises a downwardly tapered chamber 10, Fig. 1, fitting closely a casing 3 in the vessel, and provided with a valvecontrolled pipe 46 or other means for flooding the bottom space between the chamber and casing so as to float out the escape chamber. The chamber 10, which is provided with a dome-shaped top 11 having an observation tower 18, is carried by a ring casting 12 with flange 15 fitting air-tight to a seating 16, as shown, in a casting 4 secured to the deck 1 of the vessel. The chamber is secured to the vessel bv a turn screw 39 extending water-tight through the double bottom 26, 27 and engaging a screw socket 41. Water-tight doors 8, 30, and 20 are secured by eccentrically mounted rotary circular wedges 33, Fig. 3, engaging recesses in the coacting parts of the chamber. Additional security may be given by a pivoted bolt 53, Fig. 4, with a wheel nut 55 engaging with a forked lug 54.
