Abstract
1,152,655. Phthalocyanine-containing polymers. RANK XEROX Ltd. 27 June, 1966 [1 July, 1965], No. 28665/66. Headings C3B, C3P and C3R. [Also in Divisions C4 and H1] The Specification discloses polymers for use in electrophotographic elements in which at least 2 wt. per cent of the recurring molecular units comprise a phthalocyanine residue. An epoxy resin is formed by mixing tetraaminophthalocyanine with epichlorohydrin/bisphenol A epoxy resin and curing. Alternatively diamino phthalocyanine may be used to cure and cross-link epoxy resins. An addition polymer is made by polymerizing vinyl phthalocyanine and acrylonitrile; or vinyl phthalocyanine, vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, preferably in situ, by the use of a glow discharge or condensing a terpolymer of vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol and vinyl chloride with an excess of copper phthalocyanine monosulphonic acid chloride to give pendant Cu phthalocyanine attached to vinyl alcohol units through an ester link. Homopolymers of mono, di, tri and tetra-vinyl phthalocyanine are mentioned, together with a list of ethylenically unsaturated monomers for the formation of copolymers. Condensation polymers of various types are formed by the following reactions: (a) suberic acid with polyaminophthalocyanine, (b) phthalocyanine dicarboxylic acid and suberic acid with glycerol and methanol, (c) dimethylol phthalocyanine with 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate, (d) dihydroxy germanium phthalocyanine with 1,4-butanediol, (e) glow discharge polymerization of phthalocyanine tetracarboxylic acid to give a cross-linked polymer by condensation. A block copolymer may be formed condensing 3,4,3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>-tetracyanodiphenyl to give a short chain phthalocyanine polymer, oxidizing the terminal CN groups to give a di-isocyanate and condensing with 1,4-butanediol to give a polyurethane.
