1,152,524. Laying pipes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 Jan., 1968 [20 Jan., 1967], No. 3038/67. Heading F2P. Piping, e.g. of metal, which is of thin-walled construction such that it can be flattened by external pressure and subsequently reflated by internal pressure, is installed on a site, e.g. in a trench under the ground, by a method comprising the steps of flattening the piping by external pressure, e.g. by a mangle, coiling the flattened tube on a drum for transport to the site where it is to be laid, uncoiling it and laying it on the site, and either during uncoiling or after laying applying internal pressure, e.g. by compressed-air, to inflate the pipe substantially to its normal cross-sectional configuration. The piping is preferably used to convey cooling water to absorb heat from an electric cable alongside which it is laid, and is constructed of stainless steel or of mild steel coated with P.V.C. or polythene, the pipe first being sprayed with a thin film of bitumen. The piping may alternatively be used for passing an electric or other cable.
