Abstract

1,152,465. Caps for bottles, &c. W. R. GRACE & CO. 9 Sept., 1966 [15 Sept., 1965], No. 39424/65. Addition to 1,112,023. Heading B8T. [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A process for making a lined cap for a bottle, &c, comprises inserting a preformed gasket of a solid thermoplastic resilient material into a container closure which is warmed so as to cause the insert to stick to the cap, and molding the insert to the required shape with a cold mold under pressure, either the thermoplastic material containing a solid oxidized polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with another olefinic or vinyl monomer having a total content of chemically combined oxygen of 0À2-7À5% by weight, or alternatively a layer of such material being provided between the gasket and the cap. The gasket may be made from copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate, which may be mixed with polyethylene; copolymers of ethylene and acrylic acid, including esters thereof, which may be mixed with polyethylene; plasticized polyvinyl chloride; mixtures of copolymers of ethylene and propylene with polyethylene; mixtures of polyethlene with chlorosulphonated polyethylene, or with butyl rubber, or with polyisobutylene; mixtures of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers with ethylene/propylene copolymers; some of such mixtures including also ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers, in particular mixtures of polyethylene, butyl rubber, and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers; polyethylene; and mixtures of polyethylenes of different densities or molecular weights. When the oxidized ethylene is in the form of a layer between the gasket and the cap, the layer may be applied either to the gasket or to the cap. In the latter case, the layer may be applied in the form of oxidized ethylene polymer, &c. as a blend with paraffin, &c. wax; emulsions or solutions of the oxidized ethylene polymer with other components may be based upon wax, white oil, &c., or may form dispersions in an organic solvent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon. Fillers, pigments, colouring materials, slip agents, blowing agents, cork particles, resins, rust inhibitors, &c. may be added. One example with the proportions by weight specified comprises butyl rubber, low density polyethylene, oxidized polyethylene and zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate. Another example comprises low density oxidized polyethylene, and xylene coated on a gasket of low density polyethylene and butyl rubber. Another example comprises oxidized polyethylene, oleic acid, morpholine and water, heated until emulsified and when cooled coated into a cap, into which a polyethylene gasket is moulded. The cap may be of metal or plastics, and may have lugs, or be crimped or rolled onto the bottle, &c.
