Heading F2S A chuck device, which enables the full automation assembly of component parts, e.g. rubber blocks of a pedal plate, comprises an L-shaped bracket 1, which is adapted to be attached to a plate having step-by-step motion in a conveyer system and which carries, at its upper end, a hub 2 with a bushing 3 to rotatably support a hollow pin 4 to which is fixed a holder 7 of a clamping mechanism consisting of two jaws 11 biased toward each other by springs 14, an ejector spindle 4 slidably mounted in the hollow pin, a peripherally recessed indexing disc 17 mounted on the pin 4 and provided with a rolling disc 22 for frictional engagement with a co-operating member for rotation of the pin 4, an indexing pin 25 spring-loaded into engagement with a peripheral recess in the indexing disc, an abutment 28 on the indexing pin 25 for engagement with cam means to disengage the indexing pin from said peripheral recess, and an elongate support member 33 fastened to the bracket below the clamping jaws and disposed with its axis perpendicular to the axis of the hollow pin 4. At each step of the intermittent motion, the chuck is automatically indexed for the next assembly operation, the rolling disc 22 co-operating with an inclined rail, not shown, to rotate the clamping mechanism through 180 degrees to effect operations, such as inspection, at the other side, the indexing disc 17 being released as the spring-loaded indexing pin 25 is withdrawn from the recess in the disc 17 when the abutment 28 on the indexing pin 25 strikes an inclined stop, not shown. The abutment 28 leaves the associated stop and a spring 26 returns the pin 25 into the positioning recess in the disc 27 after the clamping device has been turned to its new position. The clamping device includes rigid jaws 9, with grooves in their bases for adjustable securement to the holder 7, the pair of adjustable jaws 11 being free to slide on pins 10 and being urged together by the tension springs 14. Spring-loaded sliding jaws 15 are mounted transversely in the adjustable jaws. The latter are opened when the plate carrying the bracket 1 approaches an opening unit, not shown, where a fork slides in apertures between rollers 12 and the lateral walls of the jaws 11 to force the latter open, the component parts, stored in a feeding magazine, being charged between the rigid and adjustable jaws 9, 11 so that they rest against the support 33. The opening fork is then slid out of the jaws 11 whereby the springs 14 cause the jaws 11, 15 to clamp the component parts upon which the individual operations are accomplished after each forward step of the plate. The components of the workpiece, once completed, are automatically pushed out of the clamping mechanism by means of the ejecting spindle 5 which is struck by the base of an opening fork.
