An electric thermal storage heater has an inner insulation layer 4 and ao outer insulation layer formed by self-supporting panels 5, 5 , 5<SP>11</SP> which may be moved towards or away from the inner layer to form and adjust the flow crosssection of air flow channels 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>. The panels are moved with or against the bias of springs 11 either manually or automatically in response to core or room temperature or under the control of a timing mechanism. A fixed cover 1 is provided, and the front and back of the heater may be formed by the panels 5 and 5<SP>11</SP> or by fixed screens 12 provided with suitable air flow openings. The mating surfaces of the insulation layers may be plane, undulating or of stepped formation.
