Abstract

1,151,234. Stamping. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 2 June, 1966 [3 June, 1965], No. 24538/66. Heading B3Q. A method of forming a tubular article, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises applying opposed fluid pressure to the inside and outside of a tube 10 to increase its ductility, and establishing a difference between the opposed fluid pressures to expand the tube, whilst compressing the tube longitudinally to reduce variations in its wall-thickness. A tube of copper, brass, aluminium, molybdenum or steel is supported on a perforated mandrel 46 in a telescopic die 41, 51, the inner part of which is carried by a cylinder 31 resting on a press-table 21. Fluid is poured into the part 51 and die-sections 56, 61 inserted, the part 51 being closed by a plug forced into position to a variable extent by screws 74 in an end-cap 73. A pressure regulator (28), Fig. 3 (not shown), and a valve (29) are now operated to lower a plunger 19 against the cap 73 and carry a cam (24) on the plunger against a pressure controller (26). A further valve (27) directs hydraulic pressure beneath a ram (20) bearing on a piston 37 in cylinder 31. Pressure within the tube 10 and in a chamber 72 surrounding it increases and the tube expands until the part 51 expands away from the plug 71, allowing fluid to escape from the chamber 72, past die-section 61 and into radial passages in the cap 73. This allows the article to complete its expansion against the die-walls, Fig. 5 (not shown).
