A stocking having a toe knitted and closed by twisting as disclosed in Specification 1,037,200, has the welt finished as described in that Specification followed by a tab produced by knitting a number of courses prior to the fabric being castoff the needles which tab has a run resistant structure and is of a nature which has a tendency for the fabric of the tab portion to roll up on itself. To augment the anti-raveling characteristics of the fabric of the tab portion the present invention provides a heater element 134 which is projected prior to the fabric being cast-off the needles and at a time when the needles are lowered and the sinkers withdrawn. The fabric of the tab portion hanging on the needles assumes a puckered appearance and on contacting the heater element 134 the yarns of the courses which are of a thermoplastic synthetic nature are caused to fuse together whilst maintaining the basic structure of the fabric. The resultant brittleness of the yarns when they are fused enables the subsequent portion of fabric to be broken off whilst producing a non raveling edge which can roll up with the remainder of the tab and be enclosed within the curled portion thereof. The heater element is projected at the desired times on completion of a stocking and in coordination with the needle and sinker cams lowering the needles and withdrawing the sinkers. A pneumatic take down mechanism is provided for withdrawing the fabric and nozzles adjacent the feeders serve to cause the fabric to assume an undulating attitude for contact by the heater element. In addition coarse and fine yarns may be fed at separate feeding stations to provide fine yarns which will fuse more readily to the coarser yarns.
