Abstract
1,151,095. 1,3 - Dioxan - 2 - yl - alkanoic acids and derivatives thereof. DR. KARL THOMAE G.m.b.H. 4 July, 1966 [7 July, 1965], No. 30018/66. Heading C2C. Compounds of the formula where R 1 is hydrogen or alkyl, R 2 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, R 3 and R 4 , which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or alkyl, R 5 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, said alkyl groups containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and n is 1 or 2, may be obtained by saponifying an ester (claimed per se) of the formula where R 6 is a lower (C 1-6 ) alkyl group, with a saponifying agent followed by treatment with an acid. The free acids may be converted to their salts by treatment with organic or inorganic bases, preferably employing alkali metal hydroxides, carbonates or alkoxides. The ester derivatives, from which the acids are prepared, may be obtained by reacting a diol of the formula with a keto acid ester of the formula R 5 -CO-(CH 2 ) n COOR 6 or a ketal thereof, preferably in an inert solvent and suitably in the presence of an acidic condensation catalyst. When the radicals R 2 and R 3 do not have the same meaning in the above formula for the acid, the stereoisomers may be separated by conventional methods, e.g. chromatography. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise at least one compound of Formula (I) in association with a pharmaceutical carrier or excipient. The compositions may be administered orally or parenterally and they may be solid or liquid and may take the form of capsules, .tablets, dragees, granules, syrups, suspensions or drop solutions. The compositions may contain 10-300 mg. of active ingredient per dosage unit.
