1,150,743. Azines and isohydrazones. FISONS INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS Ltd. 18 Aug., 1966 [11 Sept., 1965; 23 April, 1966], Nos. 38884/65 and 17873/66. Heading C2C. Azines and/or isohydrazones are prepared by reacting aqueous ammonia and a carbonyl compound with chloramine in a series of two or more reactors arranged as a cascade system. In the presence of a strong base the azine is formed, but if insufficient base is present the isohydrazone is formed. The chloramine may be formed in situ or in a separate stage, generally by the reaction of chlorine or a hypochlorite (usually bleach) and ammonia in the gaseous or liquid phase. Suitable carbonyl compounds are those of the formula R 1 R 2 C =0, where R 1 is H or alkyl, R 2 is alkyl or aryl, or R 1 and R 2 together with the carbon atom of the carbonyl group form a cycloaliphatic ring. The reaction may be carried out at atmospheric or elevated pressure, and the system desirably comprises 3 to 4 reactors arranged as a cascade. The azines and/or isohydrazones formed may be hydrolysed to form hydrazine, hydrazine hydrate and hydrazine salts.
