Abstract

1,150,707. Measuring electrically. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. Nov.15, 1966 [Dec.1, 1965], No.51094/66. Heading G1N. Inhomogeneities in a metal wire caused by radiation are detected by comparing the voltage produced across a length of the wire by the Thomson effect with that produced across an equal length of a similar non-irradiated wire exposed to the same temperature difference, non-equality of voltage indicating an inhomogeneity. Irradiated and non-irradiated lengths of wire, wound on reels 9, 8, Fig. 2, are joined together (or a single length of wire only half of which has been irradiated) and wound slowly on to a ceramic reel 10 in an oven 11 provided with heating coils 12. As the reel 10 rotates it also moves upwards so that the wires are wound helically on to it. The free ends of the wires are connected to a voltmeter, the connections between the wires and the voltmeter leads being immersed in a constant temperature oil bath (19, Fig.3 not shown), inhibit other thermoelectric voltages at these junctions. Temperature gradients will exist in the wire at their entry points into the oven in such directions that the voltages produced will be opposed and equal if their are no irregularities.
