Abstract
1476758 Measuring liquid level electrically INTERATOM INTERNATIONALE ATOMREAKTORBAU GmbH 12 Sept 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 39908/74 Heading G1N The level of an electrically conductive liquid 2 in a container 1 is measured by monitoring the voltage induced in a secondary winding 6 when primary winding 5 is energized, windings 5 and 6 being wound on an elongate ferromagnetic or austenitic steel core 4 so that individual turns of the coils extend generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the core along most of their lengths. In Fig. 2 the primary and secondary windings 5, 6 are wound opposite each other on the outer surface of a tubular core in respective grooves 12, 13 whereas in Fig. 1 (not shown), the windings are wound in respective longitudinal grooves and across the end-faces of the core where they cross one another at an angle less than 90 degrees. The winding arrangement is such that when liquid resistant tube 3 is fully immersed in the liquid the voltage induced in the secondary is negligibly small compared with when it is not immersed and a linear liquid level/voltage relationship is obtained. The resistance of secondary 6 may have a positive temperature coefficient and a variable resistor 16 connected thereacross to eliminate the temperature dependance of the secondary voltage when casing 3 is not wetted. Testing may be carried out using shorting switches 14, 15.
