Abstract

1,150,692. Spreaders for lifting containers. VICKERS HOSKINS PTY. Ltd. 9 April, 1968, No. 17045/68. Heading B8H. [Also in Division E2] A pair of spreaders B, Fig. 1, for lifting containers 30 are coupled together and held a predetermined distance apart by a coupling frame C. The frame has downwardly directed prongs 51, Fig. 5, which are inserted through guides 74, Fig. 3, into adjustable latching members on the spreaders. The latching members are mounted on pivoted links 63, 64 and moved longitudinally of the spreaders, to adjust the spacing between adjacent spreaders, by rams 66. When the containers are lowered into cells in the hold of a ship buffer pads on the coupling frame abut the top of the cell structure and the coupling frame is withdrawn as the spreaders descend and remains in position on top of the cells until the spreaders are raised again. The top of the latch member comprises three plates 69, 70, 71, Fig. 3, through which the prongs 51 pass. The centre one of these plates is moved laterally with respect to the other two by a ram to diminish the size of the prong receiving holes.
