Abstract

115,044. Stiening, F. C. May 6, 1916. Metal sheet feeds; punching.-In a machine for cutting or punching metal sheets or bars, the work is fed, through a distance determined by a templet, after each operation. The work 1, Fig. 1, to be operated on by punches 2 is held by a clamp 3 which is secured to racks 5 intermittently advanced by gears on the shaft 6. The driving shaft 15 rotates the crankdisk 19, thus reciprocating the sliding head 20 on which a Peau. cellier's parallel movement 26 is mounted. Links 25 are pivoted thereto at 26<1> and also to racks 12, 13 which are thus moved apart by the downward movement of the head 20, the actual movement of each depending on the position of a rack 33 upon which racks 31, 32 are closed by reason of gears 29, 30 and 10, 11 connecting them with the racks 12, 13. The intermittent rotation of the gear 10 is transmitted through the arm 9 and pawl 8 to the ratchet wheel 7 mounted on the shaft 6, so that the work is intermittingly advanced through distances depending on the position of the rack 33. This rack may be positioned by a handlever and quadrant, but is preferably positioned before each feed by means of a spacing-bar 59 carried bv a rack 53 intermittingly advanced by a gear 55, Fig. 3, shaft 42, and ratchet wheet 56. The wheel 56 is rotated by a pawl 57 on an arm 41 which is raised by a stop 47 on a bar 45 operated by a lever 44 and cam 43, Fig. 1. The arm 41 is connected to a gear 40 which, acting through a double rack 39, gear 38, shaft 50, and gear 51, reciprocates the rack 52 carrying a spring pawl 53 adapted to engage pins 60 on the spacing- bar 59. At the limit of the upward movement of the arm 41, the pawl 53 is raised by a fixed wedge 61 so that, when parts return by reason of the weighted lever 48 on the shaft 50, the rack 52 moves back till the pawl engages the next stop, this distance determining the distance the arm 41 falls and hence the extent of the next advance movement of the arm 41, ratchet wheel 56, &c., and also determining, through the gear 38, the position of the rack 33 and hence the distance through which the work is advanced. Spacing-bars.-The bar 59 has two rows of pins 60, either row being employed by adjusting the pawl 53 laterally by means of a bolt and slot 63, or the pawl may be raised by a cam 64 when the feed is being regulated by hand.
