Heading B1D; An oil filter comprises a filter element 39 consisting of a roll of toilet paper adapted for edgewise, axial filtering flow, enclosed in a demountable housing 9, 14 with mesh screens 46, 49 at the outlet side adapted to support the downstream face of element 39 when it becomes compacted (Figs. 4, 5, not shown). Clamping nuts 19 urge housing 14 on to end plate 9, which is reinforced by ribs 21, 22 and may be mounted by its lugs 6 in various positions defined by apertures (4) in support bracket (1) (Fig. 1, not shown). Plate 9 has an upstanding hollow core 31 by which oil reaches the upper, inlet face of element 39, endwall 41 of housing 14 being pressed to form channels 42, 44 facilitating flow distribution and providing annular surface 45 on which press plate 16 bears. Screens 46, 49 are turned down at their outer edges and retained on core 31 by slidable seal 50, 51. Core 31 has portions of two diameters joined by shoulder 32 over which cardboard inner tube 35 of element 39 is stretched in mounting. As tubes 35 may vary somewhat, the smaller diameter of core 31 may be a good or loose fit therein. In Fig. 2, element 39 is replaceable in housing 14, but Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates an integral housing I element whose lower end is closed by perforate screens, the arrangement being otherwise as in Fig. 2 and interchangeable with the housing 14 and element 39 therein. The filter is used in the lubricating circuit of an I.C. engine, and is arranged to filter about 10% of the flow therein, restricted by passage 28, the rest of the oil by-passing the filter.
